Commission Story: "Sisters" Custom Cat Portrait

There is something incredibly special about capturing the unique personality of a pet through custom artwork. But as an artist, the real magic happens when I get to weave a client’s personal world and passions directly into the design.

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of working on a bespoke pet portrait commission for a lovely couple, Hugh and Biddie. The stars of the show? Nina and Callie, two gorgeous sister cats.

The Inspiration: Feline Friends Meet Fine Collectables

When designing a custom pet illustration, I always look for a unique hook that makes the piece deeply personal to the owners. Alongside her love for her cats, Biddie is an avid collector of dolls. That beautiful bit of detail sparked the entire concept for the artwork.

Instead of a standard portrait background, I placed Nina and Callie inside a beautifully detailed, traditional Georgian playroom setting. It gave the final piece a charming, timeless, and whimsical vibe—the perfect nod to Biddie’s favourite hobby while keeping the spotlight firmly on the two feline sisters.

The Process: Digital Art to Fine Art Giclée Print

The finished piece, aptly titled "Sisters," was created as a digital painting. Working digitally allows me to get incredibly intricate with the details, including the toy blocks, marble and ribbon.

To bring the digital portrait into the physical world, it was printed as a stunning, gallery-quality Giclée print. Because Giclée printing uses archival, pigment-based inks on fine art paper, the colours are incredibly vibrant, the details stay crisp, and the print is built to last a lifetime.

The Verdict

The best part of creating custom pet art is always the reveal. Hugh and Biddie absolutely loved the final print, and knowing "Sisters" has found a happy place on their wall is the best feeling.
