La Choza Interior Design

I was lucky enough to win a competition with La Choza in partnership with El Jimador Tequila to design and paint their bathroom.
La Choza is one of my favourite restaurants in the whole world, they have the most incredible selection of quesadillas and nachos. I have been visiting their Brighton restaurant for probably 10 years now. So it was really special leaving my mark somewhere so important to me.

The Pitch

The project started with me pitching designs against other participants. My design revolved around the strong bright colours that feature throughout La Chozas brand as well as the “Sugar Skull” which is synonymous with Mexican culture and can be seen referenced all over the restaurant, including in their own logo.

For the Mirror above the sink, I looked for inspiration from Mexican folk art and found some stunning patterns which I thought fit the La Choza brand perfectly.

One of the most important things to me was also not affecting the running of the business so my plan was to build everything off-site in my studio and then install at night after the restaurant has closed for the day.

The Process

After winning the competition it was go go go. I started by creating my stencils. Each skull is nearly 2m high and they needed a LOT of paper to cut. Each design probably took around 4 hours to cut. Once everything was cut, it was then time to paint the design on wood which I had cut especially by the wonderful people at Cutting Edge CNC . Below is a timelapse video of some of the process.

@i_am_sprite 3 days of stencil cutting complete. In preparation for my up and coming project with #lachoza. Featuring my not so helpful assistant @Floella who likes to remind me to take breaks. I'm super excited to show you more of this as the job progresses! #stencilart #stencilcutting #streetartist ♬ Breathe - The Prodigy
