Behind the Wall: Bringing the Fox and Mouse to Southampton Multi-Stories
Sometimes, a picture doesn't tell the whole story.
If you’re just passing by Level 4A of the West Quay Multi-Stories Street Art Car Park in Southampton, you might first spot a large, curious fox. But if you take a second to look a little closer and follow the wall around the corner, you’ll find a tiny surprise waiting for him.
Meet Betty. She’s a fearless little mouse, ready to take on anything. No matter how big or scary it might seem.
I loved playing with the architecture of this space. Car parks can feel a bit brutal and rigid, so having the chance to use the physical corners to create a narrative-driven, playful interaction between the fox and Betty was a brilliant challenge. It's all about bringing a bit of nature, storytelling, and personality into the concrete layout.
The energy at the Paint Jam was incredible. A massive thank you to the whole team at @so.multistories (curated and produced by @paintshopstudio and co-produced by @good_idea_today, presented by @westquay in partnership with @southamptonforward) for putting on such a fantastic, well-organised event and bringing so much vibrant public art to Southampton.
An equally big shoutout to everyone who stopped by to say hi, chat about the design, and show their support while I was painting. Connecting with people on-site is always the best part of these jams.
Next time you’re cruising through Level 4A, make sure you look around the corner to say hello to Betty!
